What Is Qurbani in Islam?
Qurbani is the sacrifice of a specific animal during Eid al-Adha (10th–13th Dhul Hijjah) as an act of worship. It is obligatory (wajib) for Muslims who can afford it.
The purpose of Qurbani is:
To obey Allah
To remember the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim
To help poor and needy people
To promote charity and community support
Animals Allowed for Qurbani
Islam allows only certain animals for sacrifice. These are:
Goat
Sheep
Cow
Buffalo
Camel
These animals are allowed because they are halal livestock animals and were permitted in Islamic teachings.
Age Requirements for Qurbani Animals
The animal must meet minimum age requirements:
Goat: At least 1 year
Sheep: At least 1 year (6 months if healthy and big)
Cow/Buffalo: At least 2 years
Camel: At least 5 years
The animal must also be:
Healthy
Not blind
Not very weak
Not missing most teeth
Not severely injured
How Many People Can Share One Animal?
Islam allows sharing in larger animals like cows, buffalo, and camels.
Qurbani Share Rules
Animal Number of Shares
Goat 1 person
Sheep 1 person
Cow Up to 7 persons
Buffalo Up to 7 persons
Camel Up to 7 persons
This means:
One goat = One Qurbani
One sheep = One Qurbani
One cow = Seven Qurbani shares
One camel = Seven Qurbani shares
So 7 people can share one cow, and each person will get the reward of one Qurbani.
Why Is One Cow Equal to Seven Shares?
This rule comes from Islamic Hadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad). The Prophet allowed companions to share cows and camels in seven parts so that more people could participate in Qurbani, especially those who could not afford a whole animal.
Wisdom Behind This Rule
There are several reasons:
Makes Qurbani affordable for more Muslims
Prevents waste of meat
Allows more poor people to receive meat
Encourages cooperation and unity
Ensures proper distribution of food
Islam teaches that the meat should be divided into three parts:
One part for yourself
One part for relatives and friends
One part for poor and needy people
The Spiritual Purpose of Qurbani
The most important thing in Qurbani is not the meat or the animal, but the intention and obedience to Allah.
The Quran says that the meat and blood do not reach Allah, but your piety and intention reach Him. This means Qurbani is about sacrifice, obedience, charity, and helping others.
Qurbani teaches Muslims:
Obedience to Allah
Sacrifice for faith
Caring for poor people
Gratitude for blessings
Sharing with others
Conclusion
In Islam, different animals are allowed for Qurbani, and some animals like cows, buffalo, and camels can be shared by up to seven people. This system makes Qurbani easier, more affordable, and allows more people to benefit from the meat distribution.
Qurbani is not just about sacrificing an animal – it is about sacrifice, charity, unity, and obedience to Allah.
